Medical Conditions FAQs

01

How Fit Do I Need To Be?

The Health Assessment includes tests that are physically demanding. As a guide, you should feel confident that you are well enough to:

  • Run for six minutes
  • Jump as high as you can five times
  • Using your entire body, pull against an immovable object with all of your strength for 5 seconds, at least five times

If you are unsure, get checked before booking your Unbound health assessment. If you have any doubts about your health and ability to safely complete the maximal fitness tests described above, you must seek medical clearance from a GP or specialist doctor before you attend your appointment. You should tell your doctor the tests include a submaximal VO2 test and maximal strength testing (isometric mid-thigh pull and countermovement jump tests).

Who Can't Sign Up?

Our members' safety is our top priority. While we're working hard to expand who can take our functional and fitness tests, for safety we are not currently able to offer memberships for people with some short-term health conditions, injuries, and uncontrolled chronic conditions.

Pregnancy or recent childbirth

You are currently pregnant or have given birth within the last 6 months.

New unassessed health symptoms

You have new health symptoms that have not been assessed by a doctor. This includes acid reflux, indigestion, persistent nausea, bloating, feeling tired all the time, dizziness, shortness of breath, and neurological symptoms.

Recent medical event or surgery

You have experienced a medical event or surgery within the last 6 months. For example you are recovering from a heart attack, stroke, or other acute event affecting your heart, lungs, brain, or blood vessels (e.g., pulmonary embolism). Or you are recovering from surgery (including orthopaedic, spinal, and general surgery).

Active health conditions

You have an ‘active’ health condition. This means the condition affects you more than once per week, or is not yet regularly within your treatment goals. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Active cancer undergoing treatment
  • Active heart conditions: such as undiagnosed chest pain, unstable angina, coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), aortic stenosis, myocarditis, pericarditis, endocarditis
  • Known aneurysm
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure (a resting blood pressure that is consistently over 160 mmHg (systolic) or 100 mmHg (diastolic))
  • Active respiratory conditions: such as acute pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), or asthma / chronic lung diseases that interfere with your daily activities
  • Active metabolic conditions: uncontrolled diabetes (e.g., recent ketosis or consistently very high/low blood sugar), or other uncontrolled metabolic diseases

Severe mental health symptoms

You are currently experiencing severe mental health symptoms. This includes current thoughts of suicide, current self-harm, active eating disorders, current uncontrolled use of substances or alcohol, and severe depression.

Is Your Life In Danger?

Call 999 or go to A&E (Emergency Department) now if you or someone else is in immediate danger or you do not feel you can keep yourself or someone else safe. If you have seriously harmed yourself — for example, by taking a drug overdose — call 999 for an ambulance or go straight to your nearest A&E.

A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a medical emergency; you will not be wasting anyone's time.

Important:

If you have had thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life, it is crucial that you seek help immediately. Please use one of the following options:

  • Contact Samaritans crisis line on 116 123 for free and confidential advice, 24/7
  • If you have a crisis team, contact them
  • Text “SHOUT” to 85258 to connect with a free, confidential 24/7 crisis text service
  • If you are under the care of a mental health team, contact your designated mental health worker or the team's duty number
  • Call your GP surgery and ask for an emergency appointment

I Have One of the Safety Exclusion Conditions, Can I Test in the Future?

If one of the membership contraindications conditions apply to you, please wait before signing up for your Unbound Health Assessment until you meet these three conditions:

  • The recommended time has passed, and
  • If you have a short-term condition / surgery, you have fully recovered, or if you have a long-term condition, it is well controlled, and
  • The GP or specialist doctor who manages your condition has medically cleared you for cardiovascular testing (submaximal VO2 test) and maximal strength testing (isometric mid-thigh pull and countermovement jump test)

Please be aware that the Health Team will conduct final checks on the day of your assessment. If they view you as unfit to test (for example, you are unwell, injured, or you are experiencing symptoms like breathlessness), you will not be able to proceed and will need to reschedule your appointment.

My Condition Isn't Listed and I Feel Well, Can I Test?
